Updated August 2, 2026 — back-to-school window is open
Student Laptop & Software Discounts 2026, Compared
Short answer: HP advertises the biggest percentage at up to 40% off, but Apple gives the biggest dollar savings on premium machines — up to $200 off a Mac plus a back-to-school gift card worth up to $150. The bigger mistake is buying software: Microsoft 365 and Autodesk's entire suite are free with a school email, and Adobe is about 60% off.
The 60-second version
- Buy the laptop between late July and mid-September. Back-to-school promos stack on top of standing education pricing — it's the only time both apply.
- Compare final prices, not percentages. 40% off an inflated list price can cost more than 10% off a competitive one.
- Never pay for software first. Microsoft 365 is free. Autodesk is free. Check your campus IT page before buying anything — many schools already license Adobe, MATLAB and SPSS.
- Parents can buy it. Education pricing generally allows a parent to purchase for an enrolled student.
Laptop brands compared

| Samsung Education | 10–30% off | UNiDAYS or .edu | Galaxy Books, tablets, monitors — good if you already use Android |
| Apple Education | Up to $200 off Mac + gift card up to $150 | UNiDAYS | Biggest dollar savings; design, video and CS students |
| Dell Student | Student pricing + ~10% coupons | Student verification | Configurable machines; frequent stacking coupons |

| Best Buy | $50–150 off common | School email | Buying in person; price-matching across brands |
The bigger money is in software you're about to overpay for
Students routinely spend more on software over four years than they saved on the laptop. Most of it is avoidable.
Free outright with a school email
$0 — worth several hundred dollars a year
Microsoft 365 Education gives you Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Teams free, against a $69.99–99.99 yearly list price. Autodesk Education is the biggest single giveaway in this category: AutoCAD alone lists at $2,030 per year, and students get AutoCAD, Revit, Maya, Fusion, Inventor and 3ds Max free for a renewable year. Figma Professional and Notion Plus are free for students, and Avid Media Composer is free for all college students.
Check your campus IT page before you buy anything. Many universities already license Adobe Creative Cloud, MATLAB, SPSS and antivirus software for enrolled students — meaning the "student discount" you were about to pay for is already free through your school.
Adobe Creative Cloud — the one worth paying for
$59.99 → about $19.99/mo for the first year
- You're in design, film, photography or marketing
- Your coursework requires Premiere or InDesign specifically
- Your campus doesn't already license it
- You only need photo editing — Affinity is now free for everyone
- You only need video — DaVinci Resolve is free for everyone
- Your school already provides it
Note the pricing structure: the discount is roughly 60% off for year one, then it rises to about $39.99/month. Budget for the increase rather than being surprised by it.

Timing: why August matters
Two discounts stack only during the back-to-school window, roughly late July through mid-September. Standing education pricing runs year-round; the seasonal promotions do not. Apple's gift-card offer and Microsoft's college bundle — which adds a free year of Game Pass Ultimate and Microsoft 365 Premium with an eligible PC purchase, running through August 31, 2026 — both sit inside that window.
If you can wait until the window, wait. If you're buying inside it right now, buy before the promotions lapse rather than waiting for a better deal that historically doesn't arrive until the following July.
Questions students actually ask
Which brand has the biggest student laptop discount?
HP advertises the largest percentage, up to 40% off through its Education Store. Apple gives a smaller percentage but a larger dollar amount on premium machines — up to $200 off a Mac plus a gift card worth up to $150. Because percentages apply to different list prices, compare final prices rather than advertised percentages.
Do you need a .edu email?
Usually, but not always. Apple and Samsung verify through UNiDAYS, Lenovo uses ID.me, and HP and Dell verify enrollment directly. Some programs accept a student ID card or enrollment letter instead — which matters for community college and international students whose schools don't issue .edu addresses.
Can parents buy a laptop with a student discount?
Yes, in most cases. Apple's education pricing explicitly covers parents buying for a student, and most manufacturer education stores allow a purchase made on an enrolled student's behalf. The student usually completes the verification step.
What software is free for college students?
Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel and PowerPoint is free with a school email. Autodesk provides AutoCAD, Revit, Maya, Fusion and 3ds Max free for a renewable year. Figma Professional and Notion Plus are free for students, Avid Media Composer is free for all college students, and many universities separately license MATLAB, SPSS and Adobe through campus IT.
When is the best time to buy?
Late July through mid-September, when manufacturer back-to-school promotions stack on top of standing education pricing. Apple's gift-card promotion and Microsoft's college bundle both run in this window, and Microsoft's 2026 offer runs through August 31, 2026.
